After talking about it for at least a couple of years, my mom and I made granola today. We found the recipe that she’s used for years that possibly came from one of my grandmothers, but it’s not clear on the recipe card. It’s a really good basic recipe that you can adjust to incorporate your favorite ingredients or the things that you have in your kitchen. It takes about ten minutes to throw all the ingredients together, and then you just stick it in the oven for 25 minutes or so, stirring it periodically. Pretty simple.

Granola
4 cups rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup unsweetened coconut
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup toasted, unsalted soybeans (can substitute any kind of nut)
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1 cup of any kind of unsalted nuts
3/4 cup honey
1/2 cup oil
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 cups of raisins
Mix all of the dry ingredients (except the raisins) in a large bowl. Heat the honey and oil in a small saucepan until they combine. Add the honey mixture and the vanilla to the bowl with the oats; stir to coat. It may seem at first like there’s not enough liquid to coat the dry ingredients, but just keep stirring and it should work out. Transfer the mixture to an oiled pan (or two). Bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes, stirring every 5-10 minutes. It’s done when it’s starting to brown, and it will crisp up as it cools.
Let cool, and then add the raisins.

Happy birthday, Mom and Matt!
