Friends + Burgers

Hello, readers!  I’m back from a fun-filled weekend in Indiana where I attended my 5 year college reunion, and since I haven’t cooked or eaten anything but burgers (or so it seems) for the last few days, I don’t have any recipes to post.  Instead, here are a few pictures from the weekend.

Stop 1: Indianapolis.

Stop 2: Greencastle, Indiana.  After checking into the dorms we headed to our old hangout: the front porch of SAE.  We had Marvin’s delivered, and I ate my first GCB in four years.  It was amazing.  For those of you unfamiliar with Marvin’s and the GCB, Marv’s is to DePauw as The Max is to Bayside, and the GCB is their infamous garlic cheeseburger.  It’s really just two burger patties on a long bun with tons of garlic salt and maybe parsley sprinkled on top.  At least I think that’s the deal.  I hope to unlock the secret one of these days.  In case you were wondering, the burger pictured above was shared by two of us.

After visiting our sorority on Saturday, we took a brief walk around campus and then headed to a nearby bar to cool off.  The weather was brutal – upper 80s and incredibly humid, and we could hardly stand to be outside for more than a few minutes.  After living in Minnesota for three years I’d almost forgotten how hot and humid summers can be.  Fortunately the dorms are now air-conditioned.

Tourists.

GCB #2 and ranch fries.  I am usually a ranch hater, but there’s something about the ranch at Marvin’s that elevates it above all other versions that I’ve tried.  Would you like to know something gross?  This was only the second of three burgers I ate over the course of two days.  For our class dinner that night we were served mediocre burgers, which made all of us excited for reunions down the road when our class donations are in the million-dollar range and we get better food.

More tourists.

More friends.

Sunday breakfast at a diner in Plainfield.  Not surprisingly, no one in our party ordered the fried mush, which my aunts tell me is actually corn meal.

No one ordered the sausage roll-up either.

On a final DePauw-related note, here are a couple of food blogs from my classmates:

The Paupered Chef

Unlikely Vegetarian

I’m going into a meat-free, vegetable-filled detox for a while and should have some new recipes up soon.  Stay tuned!

I feel like such a stalker but I have to tell you I’ve been following your blog and I too am a DePauw grad (07) AND am from Iowa. AND I’m friends and soro sisters with Beth (unlikely vegetarian). Such a small world…

      Jen,

You are not a stalker! At least I hope not. :) I love hearing from readers, and getting a comment from a DePauw grad and a fellow Iowan pretty much made my day. Also, I hung out with Beth this weekend. Small world for sure. Thanks for commenting!

Stephanie, I’m bummed that you weren’t there! For some reason I thought you were going to be, and I was looking forward to seeing you.

  3. Thanks for the shout-out…AND glad to hear you’re joining me in the meat-free world, even if it’s just for a few days! Marvin’s can probably do that to anyone!
