It took me until August 8th to make it to the farmers’ market this summer, and thank god I stopped being so lazy and so good at making excuses because I left with a huge load of vegetables and a (relatively) huge wad of cash still in my wallet. And thanks to the heat advisory-inducing temperatures, I easily resisted spending my leftover dough on a stick of fried corn dough encasing a hot dog. But the state fair is near, so a corn dog is also near. Or are there any upcoming NASCAR races in the area? That would mean corn dogs, too, as I learned from my first (and likely last) NASCAR race. Or is there a GT Xpress 101 headed my way so I can make my own corn dogs in just nine minutes? Wait a minute. Am I rambling about corn dogs again?
Let’s refocus. I went to the farmers’ market. I bought a bunch of vegetables. Here’s what I ended up with:
Six zucchini: $2
Serranos: $2. An impulse buy. Not sure what I’m going to do with all of these in a week unless I go on a guacamole-only diet, which I am by no means opposed to.
Okra: $3
Baby bok choy: $1
Radishes: $1
Lettuce: $1
6 ears of corn: $3
Veggies for lunch today, supplemented by fresh ricotta and crusty bread. Real summer is the best!

i never thought of eating raw okra…. what does it taste similar to? all i know is in its cooked slimy state it does nothing for me. a crunchy okra would be worth a try. you’re the best kirsten. by the way you wanna see aunt karen get married on you tube? go to gazette online and there it is. fun……. part way through you can hear molly laugh her unmistakable laugh.
I’m not sure what to compare raw okra to, but I think you should give it a shot. It’s really crunchy, and there’s little to no slime. I love it, but I guess I also love it cooked in things or coated in cornmeal and fried. But what isn’t good when it’s coated in cornmeal and fried?
I was also curious about the raw okra. I have some in the fridge from the farmers’ market last Saturday, so I guess I have another way to eat it. Have you ever grilled okra? I did that for the first time over the weekend — really easy and delicious.
