Everything that I ate this weekend falls into one of three categories: breakfast food, salad or things that six-year-olds eat. While I didn’t chow down on any Lunchables or Fruit by the Foot, I ate a hot dog one night and tater tots the next. I guess adults eat those things, too, but I can’t remember the last time I ate a hot dog outside of a sporting event or summer barbecue, and when I ordered a side of tater tots at dinner the following night, I noticed a theme. I couldn’t help but feel like I was only a few mini corndogs and a juice box away from a Barbie birthday cake and learning cursive. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional beefy hot dog or basket of salty tater tots, though, and sometimes I get too distracted by things like baby eagles, sunshine and a shirtless, defeated Rafael Nadal to worry about cooking a more elaborate dinner.
Saturday breakfast: steel-cut oats with mango, pecans, and maple syrup. I’m looking forward to repeating this with the leftover oats this week.
I had half of a package of hot dogs in my freezer from the last time I made pretzel dogs, and after Matt claimed the leftover pizza for dinner, I opted for a hot dog. Nothing else sounded very appealing, and making a single hot dog was easier than defrosting a bunch of meatballs when I only wanted two. Matt reheated his pizza, and I boiled and seared my hot dog and giggled a lot. I don’t think I’ve cooked myself a hot dog on the stove since…ever.
My complete meal: a hot dog and cheese puffs. Most six-year-olds probably don’t eat their hot dogs on baguettes or wash them down with a glass of pinot noir, so I guess I have that going for me.
Sunday breakfast: orange-cinnamon french toast with bacon and fruit. Yes! Good! Recipe coming soon.

Oh cheese puffs…I came to the recent realization that they are far more delicious than we ever gave them credit for as children.
I’ve always had a weakness for Cheetos. The ones in this post are the Whole Foods version of cheese puffs, but there’s nothing quite like the real neon orange ones.
that breakfast is one of my favorites. no it is my favorite! happy spring to you kirsten..
Likewise!
One of the things that I always have on my list of “things I’m not willing to give up” when the discussion of “are you a vegetarian too?” comes up is a foot-long hot dog at Wrigley Field (also Carolina bbq, bacon, pretty much any pork!). However, a hot dog on a crusty baguette with cheetoes would be a worthy substitute! I’d opt for vinho verde though!
